Last week I went to midwife as I was experiencing some bad cramping, thankfully no spotting/bleeding. As I was only 8wks the midwife tried to listen into the h/b but assured me not to get worried if she doesnt hear anything as it could be too early.

Well, she did hear a little flutter, Thank goodness. She took bloowork from me and the results came back as a high hormone level (i never got the numbers). She then went onto to do my family history, I told her I have a history of twins, my grandmother, aunt and uncle and cousins, all on my father's side.

She then told me that the cramping could be due to two babies growing and also this indicates the high levels of hormone in my blood work. But to be honest I am not sure if she is just saying that because of my family history.

I asked if I could be booked in for an u/s but the soonest she booked me in for is 2/22 I asked to be seen sooner but he reason is that because I live in a very small place, our u/s equipment is used for various abdonminal treatments not just maternity, although maternity is given priority is only in extreme cases, and at 8wks they wouldnt see enough anyway.

To be honest, I dont know how I feel about the prospect of twins. I suppose you just have to muddle on but with one who will just be 2yrs old I just worry about all the extra hard work.

Could there be any other explanation, should I complain about the midwife for worrying me which could turn out to be unnessary? Or do you think she is just preparing me for a possibility?

WOW Cat- Twins!! I can only imagine the overwhelming feeling that you are experiencing! I know Feb 22 seems an eternity away for you!!
If it does turn out to be twins just know you can get some great tips on caring for them from our wonderful twin moms here!! :)
What is your DHs feelings about twins?

I have a girlfriend who has fraternal twin girls who will be 2 in March and she is due this summer with identical boys!!! She told me that just the thought makes her want to throw up !! LOL!! But on a positive note she did say that you get a routine and whether one baby or two you will have your good days and your bad! That's just life! :)

Best of wishes to you for healthy baby(s). Keep us posted! Has the cramping stopped ?

Mel, thanks for sharing your girlfriends experience, the thought of two sets of twins seems much more overwhelming!

DH is excited, more so than I am. The cramping hasnt stopped, but today I noticed I felt two flutters on different sides, I will be 10wks tomorrow and I thought it kind of early to be feeling them so early but I believe that a second pregnancy you will probably feel them earlier. With the flutters, again I am trying to be logical, by thinking that the baby will be swimming around more just now and thats why I am feeling them on different sides.

The other thing I never added is that I am piling on weight and I have a bump already, with Sarah I didnt show until I was into my 5th month. But again, I am trying to be logical by thinking that its a second pregnancy and I might put on weight quicker this time.

Twins are wonderful Cat! ;) I know it can seem daunting when you have another one. I can totally understand. I would be scared too. But you will adjust. Twins are actually a little easier because they tend to be more independent. The most important thing with twins is to get them on a similar schedule of eating/sleeping/bathing, etc.

If it is twins, there's so much support out there! Don't worry. It's more scary than the reality actually is. I was TERRIFIED before my kids were born. It can be challenging, but you adjust!

Are there any mothers of multiples groups near you? I love my club! I've made lots of friends and found lots of support too!

The 22nd isn't too far away. Hang in there! :bighug:

Thanks Mina, you know what twins are like first hand :)

I am going to find out tomorrow (1/28) if I will be having one or two babies. I had some cramping which had me doubled over this morning. Although I dont think there is anything serious going on. I personally think its stress related, I lost my aunt whom I was very close to on Friday and I had a lot to go through, since coming home I think its kind of hit me and the cramping is being related to that.

I have been told to rest up today and take paracetomol (tyenol) and I have been booked in to the early pregnancy unit for an u/s tomorrow for a check. I have been told that they will be able to tell me if there is one or two there.

First let me say I am so sorry about your Aunt! It is never easy losing someone!!
Be sure to take care of yourself today and get lots of rest! Do you have help with your daughter today?

I look forward to hearing about your appt. and if it is twins but most importantly that everything is going good for baby whether one or two!

Second time around you do start showing and feeling the little one earlier. Or at least I did with Joshua. :) But we will know for sure tomorrow! Esp about those flutters on two different sides!

Tomorrow you will get answers!!! Lot better than waiting till Feb!!

HUGS-

Hi Cat!

I just wanted to wish you good luck tomorrow! I can imagine that the prospect of twins would be pretty daunting, especially with your first being so young. I am sure that she will be all excited to help Mommy out, though, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. images/smilies/janNew/smile.gif

Whatever you find out tomorrow, it'll work out fine!
Keep us posted!

BABY, yes there is only one there :yippee: You cant believe how relieved I am

They cant see why I am cramping so much, they checked for cysts and my kidneys and everything looks fine. The consultant believes the reason why it was so bad yesterday was from the stress I suffered over the weekend. She thinks that I could have been trying to stop myself stressing out for the baby's sake but reckons I may tighten up and reduce oxygen to the baby.

But the little heart was flickering and you could see little hands, the leg limbs are just about developed and I am measuring exactly to my dates :)

Oops, sorry I missed all the anxiousness and excitement - its been a bit hectic here lately.

Given your posts I'm going to say "congratulations" on just ONE baby. I'm partial to saying twins are wonderful but they are not for everyone and it didn't sound like you were ready for that! I'm sooooo happy to hear that the baby is healthy and happy! I hope your cramping subsides, that must be scary!

And by the way, most of the medical information will tell you that twins are not truly hereditary. I know it seems to run in families but there's no genetic basis for it really, especially not from the husband's side!
