What are your favorite charities to donate to?

When I was growing up, my family did a lot of work for charity. My parents were members of a local clowning organization, who performed at local charity functions, and participated in carnival days at local orphanages and homes for people with special needs. My grandfather was an officer with the Salvation Army (the guys who stand outside of department stores during the holidays, with the red bucket and the bell). At the same time, we were poor, so we received a lot of help from charity as well -- groceries, even Xmas trees, when we couldn't afford them. My parents made sure that we gave back as much as we could, a sentiment that has stayed with me; and which I hope to be able to instill into my own children some day.

The list of charities I have donated to is long, but some of the ones from the last few years include (for an abbreviated list, LOL):

Salvation Army (of course)
Good Will
United Way
Toys for Tots
Friends of the Earth
Pennsylvania Environmental Network
Humane Society of the United States
National Multiple Sclerosis Society
Autism Society of America

I also save my Box Tops for Education and my Labels for Education, to send in once a year to whatever school district nearest to me collects them.

I can't really say that I have any "favorites", but the causes that are nearest and dearest to me are autism, education, poverty, and the environment. Diabetes, as well. The American Diabetes Association's Walk in Philly this year is the day after we are moving. :-( I'll have to wait to catch up with that whenever they are in FL...

Good question!
:-)
