I am getting ready to start my son on solids. Is there a reason to pick one grain cereal over another?

We use Earths Best products from Whole Foods. They are organic and contain no GMOs. Brand aside I'm pretty sure that babies should start out on Rice cerial as opposed to multigrain or oatmeal.

My cousin said that she knew of a few babies that became constipated when rice was their first, so she started her baby on barley, then oatmeal... I'll see. I haven't actually shopped for it yet, let alone bought it. Will probably go with rice as that seems to be the standard.

That's funny because Seda got really bad gas from the rice cerial but I just thought that was just her :embarass:

They say that rice cereal is supposed to be the least allergenic on babies, and that's why they recommend it first. The whole grain cereals, like wheat and barley, are supposed to be given after the first year b/c of babies' immature intestinal systems. My pediatrician confirmed this, so I stuck with rice and oatmeal.

I found that my kids liked the rice okay, but they love oatmeal! I now mix it with peaches and prunes to help prevent constipation. I use the rice to mix with vegetables for snacks or dinner, and my kids like it better that way. Their favorite is rice cereal mixed with sweet potatoes.

We haven't started cereal for Sierra yet. We're going to wait until she's a lot older.

how old is sierra? at what age are you thinking of starting? (if you don't mind my asking)

we did start rice cereal at 4 months, and stayed with it for a full month. DS just turned 5 months, and we have been doing barley for a few days now. After speaking with many people (including my Lac Consultant) I think we are going to start slowly introducing veggies too, staring with a sweet potato this week. I am having fun with this! He still has very little, only 2 tbsp twice a day and so is still getting almost all of his nutrition from nursing for now.

I have been doing barley for about 2 weeks now. He made a face at first, but continued eating it, seems to enjoy it now. Only comment is that it makes for stinkier and thicker diapers than the rice did... ew.

We started Julian on rice cereal when he was about 4 months old (a little over 4 months). It took some time for him to get used to it, but once he did, boy, could he chow it down. I stuck to rice and oatmeal until he was over a year old, then added multigrain - he didn't care for it much.

It's been so long since that time, but I thought of this again b/c I found an old box of rice cereal in the pantry the other day! What a waste!

Glad to know that my twins still love oatmeal!
